Gamified Quiz
Tools Used: Articulate Storyline, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe XD
The Problem
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 1 in 6 Americans (or 48 million people) get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die from foodborne diseases each year. Many consumers assume foodborne illness is usually the result of improper handling by manufacturers or food service employees. The reality is that improper storage and preparation of food in the home is the cause of most cases of food poisoning. The average consumer is unaware of the exact steps to take to avoid foodborne illness.
The Solution
An eLearning quiz provides an opportunity for consumers to test their existing knowledge and learn new details without the burden of an “information dump.” Gamification (in this case, a digital badge) is used as a tool to increase motivation and engagement. A visual indication of achievement adds to the participant’s desire to retry the module and improve their score.
Development
I consulted with a food safety expert employed by a large grocery store chain to develop an action map based on the most common errors and misconceptions in consumer food handling. This action map, in addition to information available at FoodSafety.gov, was used to develop a text-based storyboard. Visual mock-ups with a partial storyboard were developed in Adobe XD for review by the subject matter expert. Vector-based assets from Freepik and Vecteezy were modified in Adobe Illustrator to create a cohesive design and color scheme. Finally, the full project was finalized in Articulate Storyline.
